Do You Sleep with the Light On? Here's What Could Happen to Your Heart, According to a Study

· Telemundo McAllen (KTLM)

A recent study published in the European Heart Journal indicates that sleeping with exposure to light may lead to harmful changes in heart structure and function. Previous research linked nighttime light exposure to increased risks of coronary artery disease, heart attacks, heart failure, and strokes. This study, the first of its kind, analyzed data from 11,071 participants in the UK Biobank. It found that those exposed to light levels above 3 lux while sleeping had measurable cardiac damage, including a 2.4% larger left ventricle and a 1.5% thicker heart wall compared to those in darker rooms. These changes, although seemingly minor, are associated with cardiovascular diseases.
