Amazon Sued by FTC and 22 States Over Advertising Practices

Amazon illegally raised prices for advertisers by covertly increasing the minimum required price to run ads promoting its products, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleged in a lawsuit filed Monday in federal court. The agency, along with a bipartisan group of 22 U.S. states, claimed that Amazon systematically inflated auction prices without advertisers' knowledge, costing them $20 billion or more. 'Amazon has been able to generate billions of dollars in profits at the expense of its advertising customers in auctions,' the FTC stated in the lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington. Advertisers suffered losses of billions due to the price hikes, while the states may seek civil penalties and attempt to recover some of that money, according to the FTC.

Trump-Ordered Mail Voting System is 'Plagued with Errors,' Whistleblower Claims

The United States Postal Service (USPS) is set to launch a hastily built and error-ridden computer system that could jeopardize the traditional mail voting process relied upon by one-third of all voters, according to a whistleblower's statement released Tuesday by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. This effort is part of the implementation of President Donald Trump's executive order limiting mail voting, which has been temporarily halted by a federal judge. The administration is appealing the ruling, and the directive could eventually return to the U.S. Supreme Court. The unidentified whistleblower claims that USPS has been rushing to build a complex system that would normally take a year or more in just three months, sometimes defying the judge's orders that halted the work. The goal is to have it ready for use in the midterm elections in November. The revelation states that, due to the new procedures, a single scanning error in a batch of tens of thousands of ballot envelopes could prevent any of them from reaching voters. It details a system that election officials have already warned could not be implemented before the first mail ballots begin to be sent out on Friday in North Carolina.

Exclusive: ICE Arrests 50,000 People in August, Maintains Record Pace

ICE agents and officers arrested nearly 50,000 people in August, according to a senior Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official familiar with preliminary arrest data. This figure matches that of July, which was the highest monthly arrest total during Donald Trump's second term. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is experiencing a nationwide increase in arrests that is less visible than the aggressive enforcement efforts earlier this year, when the Border Patrol moved from city to city, culminating in the shooting deaths of two American citizens in Minneapolis. Arrests sharply declined in February and March but began to rise again in May. June and July saw record numbers of ICE arrests, according to ICE arrest data.
