In His First Encyclical, the Pope Calls for Disarming AI with Strong Regulation

Pope Leo XIV called on Monday for robust regulation of artificial intelligence and urged its developers to work for the common good rather than profit, in a broad manifesto on how to safeguard humanity as technology impacts everything from work to warfare. 'Magnifica Humanitas' (Magnificent Humanity), Leo's first encyclical, had been eagerly anticipated since the first pope born in the United States announced shortly after his election that he considered AI the greatest challenge facing humanity today. In the text, Leo condemned the 'culture of power' driving the AI race, particularly in the development of increasingly sophisticated methods of remote warfare. He stated that it is 'not permissible' to entrust irreversible and lethal decisions to AI systems, highlighting a point of friction between the American pope and the administration of President Donald Trump, which has aggressively worked to deregulate AI development. 'We must disarm AI' to remove it 'from logics that turn it into an instrument of domination, exclusion, and death,' the pope said at the Vatican during a special presentation of the encyclical, one of the highest doctrinal documents a pope can issue. Experts from the tech industry, academia, and Catholic ethics noted that the document will likely become a reference point in the AI debate, serving as a benchmark for policymakers, researchers, and ordinary citizens. It arrives at a time when nearly daily technological advancements are raising concerns about the replacement of human jobs by AI and even the replacement of human intelligence. 'This leads those at the forefront of these tools, who can see the incredible things they are capable of, to question their own 'what does it mean to be human?',' commented Taylor Black, an AI executive at Microsoft and director of the AI institute at the Catholic University of America.

Federal Emergency Declared Due to Chemical Tank Incident in Garden Grove

President Donald Trump approved a Federal Emergency Declaration in response to the collapse of a tank containing toxic chemicals in Garden Grove, California Governor Gavin Newsom and Representative Derek Tran reported on Monday. The approval allows for support in evacuating residents, monitoring environmental conditions, and assisting communities affected by the incident, according to a statement from the California governor's office. The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) reported on Monday morning that the risk of a massive and catastrophic explosion known as a BLEVE has been eliminated. However, the threat from the collapse of the methyl methacrylate (MMA) tank at the GKN Aerospace facility may still pose public health and environmental issues. Therefore, evacuation orders remain in effect. 'We thank the federal government for approving our request and helping to bolster the resources already on the ground to assist this community in recovering safely,' Governor Newsom said in a statement. The emergency declaration also activates additional resources, including coordination with federal agencies and 'coverage of 75% of the cost of any federal resources used,' Tran stated. The California governor declared a state of emergency for Orange County on Friday. Over the weekend, nearly 800 first responders and emergency personnel have been deployed. Experts in toxic chemicals and other fields such as public health have been working continuously since the incident began. As of early Monday, evacuation orders remained in place for approximately 50,000 people. These evacuations were ordered late last week due to the threat of a BLEVE that could release the tank's toxic contents into the air. For residents in the evacuation zone, this hazardous materials situation triggered a troubling chain of events that extended throughout the weekend. Evacuation shelters were at or near full capacity, and there was no immediate information on when residents would be allowed to return home. Several schools in the area will remain closed until further notice. An update on the evacuation orders was expected in the coming hours.

They placed American flags at approximately 250,000 graves in Arlington and 13,500 in Washington, honoring fallen heroes. Jeb Hague, it holds personal significance as they remember friends and family buried there. The event culminates in a poignant display of remembrance for Memorial Day weekend.

Trump administration to force foreigners in the US to apply for a green card abroad

The Trump administration has announced a significant policy change requiring foreigners in the U.S. seeking green cards to apply from their home countries. This marks a departure from over 50 years of allowing legal residents, including spouses of U.S. citizens and visa holders, to adjust their status within the U.S. Exceptions may apply in extraordinary circumstances. Critics argue this could lead to family separations and complicate the immigration process, especially for those from countries with limited visa processing capabilities. The exact implementation date and specific impacts on ongoing applications remain unclear, raising concerns among immigrant advocacy groups.
