In contrast, the agency predicted 'strong to severe' thunderstorms from the mid-Atlantic to the Northeast, which could also emerge in the central United States. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) had already forecasted in March that the drought affecting more than half of the United States would extend this spring, along with above-average temperatures across much of the territory from April to June. The agency announced the formation of El Niño, a climate phenomenon that implies above-normal temperatures in the Pacific, with the possibility of being 'very strong,' which could exacerbate droughts and heavy rainfall, as well as increase the risk of heat waves both on land and in the ocean.
