Attendees are encouraged to dress as their favorite fantasy characters. The theme for this year's reading challenge is 'Unearth a Story,' running from June 1 to July 10. The program aims to engage the community in reading and creative activities throughout the summer.
Man hides cash envelopes across the Valley to help residents
Ricardo Alvarez, a resident of the Rio Grande Valley, has been hiding envelopes containing $50 across the area, encouraging locals to search for these hidden treasures. This initiative, which started several months ago, aims to provide a little financial relief to those in need while also creating a fun community activity. Alvarez runs the 'Find The Cash 956' Facebook page, where followers can vote on locations for the next cash drops and receive hints. He spends about $400 monthly on this project, funded entirely out of his own pocket, and has gained 11,000 followers in just three months.
Brownsville public library to host dinosaur traveling exhibit
The Southmost Branch of the Brownsville Public Library is set to host a traveling exhibit from the Dinosaur George Traveling Museum. This exhibit will feature a variety of dinosaurs and other ancient creatures, allowing visitors to explore fossils and skeletons while learning about prehistoric history. The event is scheduled for June 3 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and June 4 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This event aims to support local cancer patients facing financial difficulties, with proceeds funding essential assistance programs such as financial aid, transportation services, free wigs, and breast prostheses. The 5K coincides with National Cancer Survivors Month, encouraging participation from cancer survivors, caregivers, and families to promote awareness and solidarity. The event will take place at 201 N. 1st Street, and aims to honor those lost to cancer while supporting current fighters.

South Padre Island residents express concern over AEP mobile skid impact
Residents of South Padre Island are expressing concerns about a proposed temporary transmission station, or mobile skid, intended to maintain power during substation repairs. Larry Floyd, a resident for ten years, highlighted that the site is close to a high-density residential area and wetlands, affecting around 250 residents. AEP plans to install the mobile skid to prevent long outages while upgrading their infrastructure. City Manager Randy Smith acknowledged the residents' concerns but emphasized the urgency of having backup power, especially with the 4th of July approaching. The mobile skid is expected to be in place for about 18 months before removal.

On Thursday, Progreso High School hosted a memorial for 17-year-old Samuel Hernandez, who drowned in a canal while fishing with friends. The event, named "Samuel's Last Ride," drew hundreds of attendees, including family, friends, and community members. Progreso ISD officials expressed gratitude for the community's support, including a chicken plate sale that raised funds for Hernandez's funeral expenses, with all 1,800 plates sold. The nonprofit RGV Wings of Hope is also assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Counseling services are available for students and staff to help cope with the tragedy. Ongoing road project bringing relief to Harlingen neighborhood streets
