U.S. Citizen Accused of Conspiring with Author of Massacre in Canada

SEATTLE — Federal authorities announced on Tuesday that they have arrested and charged a 30-year-old resident of Washington state for inciting an 18-year-old to carry out one of the worst school shootings in Canadian history. The accused allegedly offered to livestream the February attack, provided money, and advised on how to delete online messages to keep the plan secret. The U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle stated that James Cody Bryant, from Bellingham, Washington, communicated with Jesse Van Rootselaar from British Columbia for at least six months prior to the shooting. Bryant, who identifies as female, did not report Van Rootselaar's plans to authorities, according to the latter. W. Mike Herrington, special agent in charge of the FBI office in Seattle, stated that without Bryant's 'misguided loyalty' and willingness to livestream the murders, it is unknown if Van Rootselaar would have carried out the attack. 'We know for certain that the shooter was concerned there wouldn't be enough viewers for the livestream if Bryant didn't broadcast it; she relied on Bryant to amplify the stream, as she did not have many followers on social media,' Herrington added.
