Mexico City – The Mexican government reiterated on Friday that it has not been proven that lettuce produced in the state of Guanajuato, in central Mexico, is the source of the cyclosporiasis outbreak reported in the United States, despite U.S. authorities maintaining a link between the illness and the product. Federal Commissioner for the Protection against Health Risks, Víctor Hugo Borja, explained that the U.S. investigation arose from interviews conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) with infected individuals, many of whom reported consuming processed lettuce at fast-food restaurants. Based on those testimonies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) traced the distribution chain to a Taylor Farms facility in Guanajuato and notified Mexico of the possible association. 'What we are being reported are hypotheses, not confirmed issues,' Borja stated during the presidential morning conference.
