Mexico is 'getting closer every day' to reaching new trade agreements with the United States and does not expect to lose its favorable position compared to other Washington partners, said Mexican Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard on Thursday after meeting for nearly an hour with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. 'We are approaching many things. Advancing, aligning positions, resolving issues. And we are making progress, progress, progress,' Ebrard summarized from the G20 Trade Ministers' meeting in Milwaukee. He added, 'There’s a saying in Mexico, that perseverance pays off. So, in the Mexican way, we must persevere. Every day we are closer to having new agreements.' Ebrard assured that Mexico maintains better conditions than other countries in its trade relationship with the U.S., after comparing the situation with representatives from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and other economies present at the G20. 'I was able to confirm that we are in a more favorable situation than the others,' he stated. The secretary also affirmed that even with the changes Washington is pushing in its trade policy, Mexico will retain an advantageous position. 'Before you had a very good position, this government came in, and we have the best position as well. And we do not expect that to change,' he noted, while summarizing Mexico's situation as 'the country that exports the most and pays the least.' However, Ebrard acknowledged that U.S. measures under Section 232, which impose a 25% tariff on Mexican steel and vehicle exports, are still pending. The discussions are taking place alongside the review of the USMCA, where the U.S. and Mexico have addressed issues such as steel and aluminum, automobiles, economic security, agriculture, and labor during bilateral rounds.
