Free Narcan now available in Hidalgo County vending machines

Hidalgo County has introduced five vending machines that dispense Narcan, a naloxone product, for free without a prescription. Located in Edinburg, McAllen, Weslaco, and Elsa, these machines aim to provide easy access to this life-saving medication, which blocks the absorption of narcotics. Dr. Ivan Melendez of the Hidalgo County Health Authority emphasized the importance of Narcan for various situations, including accidental overdoses. Users can obtain up to two units weekly. Behavioral Health Solutions is also offering free training on overdose recognition and response, having trained over 7,000 individuals this year to promote awareness and support for those dealing with addiction.
