Governor Abbott Promotes Higher Education with Free Application Week

· Telemundo McAllen (KTLM)

Austin, TX— Governor Greg Abbott is promoting Free College Application Week, which runs from October 12 to 18. During this week, Texas residents can apply for admission to undergraduate programs at any public college or university in the state at no cost. Governor Abbott stated: 'I froze tuition and fees for undergraduate programs until the 2026-2027 academic year to keep costs low for Texas students. A three-year degree could further reduce the total cost and save up to $35,000. These measures will help build a stronger Texas for future generations.' This initiative is part of the efforts by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) and actions taken by the governor in August to develop a state framework for three-year undergraduate programs in high-demand job areas with competitive salaries. The governor also mentioned that a three-year degree could reduce the cost of a bachelor's degree by up to 25%, allowing students to save between $15,000 and $35,000. The Higher Education Commissioner noted: 'Free College Application Week is another way Texas makes it easier and more affordable for students to plan and continue their education.' The governor signed a law requiring all public colleges and universities to waive application fees for Texas residents applying to undergraduate programs through ApplyTexas. It is estimated that 260,000 applications were submitted during Free College Application Week, according to the announcement. Students have until 11:59 p.m. on October 18 to apply, and for questions related to residency status, they can visit Texas Residency Guidelines.
