Consuming Too Much Sugar While Taking Antibiotics Could Be Harmful, Study Says

· Telemundo McAllen (KTLM)

Avoiding sugary foods and drinks while on antibiotics may protect the microbiome and, in turn, the overall health of the patient, according to a clinical study published in the journal Nature. Antibiotics are used to treat infections, but they also widely destroy beneficial gut bacteria, allowing harmful microbes to proliferate excessively. A team of researchers from several U.S. centers monitored the diets of blood cancer patients during the weeks they were hospitalized for intensive treatment known as 'allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation.' The patients underwent intensive chemotherapy, sometimes accompanied by radiation therapy, to eliminate their immune system before undergoing a stem cell transplant.
