South Texas hunters get an early start as dove numbers hit record highs

· ValleyCentral (KGBT)

Dove season in South Texas kicks off early this year, with hunters anticipating a record number of birds. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports approximately 12.9 million white-winged doves and 36 million mourning doves statewide. Ranchers in the Rio Grande Valley, like McLean Beckwith of Mac’s Dove Hunts, note an abundance of birds due to favorable weather conditions. This year, the South Zone dove season opens on September 1, allowing hunters to start at dawn instead of noon. Despite the earlier start, daily bag limits remain unchanged at 15 doves, with shooting hours from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset.
