Toys “R” Us is Back: Will Open 120 Stores for the Holiday Season

Some people never seem to grow up. And Toys “R” Us, which is experiencing a resurgence, hopes to capitalize on that. The iconic chain announced on Thursday that it will open 120 standalone Toys “R” Us locations this holiday season. In total, there will be 160 independent stores open in time for Christmas, according to the company. The chain already has a presence in numerous Macy’s locations across the country. Many adults and even teenagers are expected to shop for themselves at these stores, in addition to the usual holiday shopping for children. Sales of toys in households composed solely of adults have already surpassed those in households with children, with a 16% growth up to June, according to market research firm Circana, accounting for 55% of the total toy industry revenue. Toy sales among all adults are growing at 25%, just behind the teenage group at 33%. Together, teenagers and adults generated nearly 60% of the incremental dollar growth in the sector during the first half of the year, Circana reported.
