Edinburg to Offer Assistance for Homestead Exemption Applications to Reduce Property Taxes

· Telemundo McAllen (KTLM)

EDINBURG, Texas – Homeowners in Edinburg will have the opportunity to receive guidance on applying for the Homestead Exemption, a benefit that can help reduce the amount of property taxes they pay. The city of Edinburg will hold its fourth annual registration event for the Homestead Exemption on Wednesday, October 14, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library, located at 1906 S. Closner Blvd. During the event, staff from the Hidalgo County Appraisal District will be available to answer questions about the process, explain eligibility requirements, and assist homeowners in completing their applications. Attendees will need to present a Texas driver's license or state-issued ID, with the address on the document matching the property for which the exemption is being requested. To qualify for the partial homestead exemption under Texas Property Tax Code 11.13, the homeowner must occupy the home as their principal residence and cannot claim a homestead exemption on another property. The city stated that the goal of the event is to streamline the process and help homeowners ensure they have the necessary documentation to apply for the benefit. For more information, residents can call 956-381-8466 or 956-388-8206.
