Five dead from rains, floods, and landslides after the passage of Simon and Rachel in Mexico

· Telemundo McAllen (KTLM)

ENSENADA, Mexico — Hurricane Simon and the remnants of storm Rachel are causing heavy rains, floods, and landslides in various areas along the Mexican Pacific coast, resulting in five confirmed deaths, authorities reported on Monday. Simon remained a Category 2 hurricane on Monday, moving slowly parallel to the coast and bringing heavy rains across six Pacific states, including Guerrero, where one person died. However, it was further north in Baja California where the remnants of storm Rachel caused more damage due to flooding and landslides. At least four people died: a 13-year-old girl whose body was found on Sunday, and two women and a 4-year-old boy whose bodies were discovered on Monday, according to Ignacio Lozoya, the state coordinator for Civil Protection, in a statement to The Associated Press. Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila had already reported the discovery of the girl’s body earlier in the day. All bodies were found in Ensenada, the area most affected not only by flooding but also by landslides and rising streams.
